What is the greatest challenge facing your generation? What will be necessary to address it?

What four-year college/s are you interested in and why?
i am interested in going to UC Irvine because the school has plenty of computer programs for me to choose from to major in. I have been interested in some type of computer major ever since i have been a kid. They always fascinated me with the possibilities that they could do.

Beyond grades, what motivates you to work hard at school?
I would have to say the wanting to prove to myself how well i can do in school. I know how important it is to work hard in school because without an education i won't be going far in life.

What in the world do you care about and what are you doing about it?

i care about getting into college so i am studying to do better so that i will have a better chance of getting into college.

Semester Reflection Part 1

Choose at least three (3) of the following and answer them in depth. I will quote from your answers in your report card comments, so please take time to edit & revise your writing, ensuring that it is ready for public consumption. For each answer, be sure to use specific evidence & examples.

  • What have you learned about the way you learn, work, and/or collaborate?
  • What project was most valuable to you, and what have you gained from it?
  • Describe in detail one significant academic challenge you faced this year. Why was it a challenge for you? Go in depth, use specific experiences, and explain how they contrast with a less challenging experience.
  • Describe one valuable mistake you made this year.
  • What is your greatest strength as a student in a project-based learning environment?
  • What challenges do you face as a student in a project-based learning environment?
What have you learned about the way you learn, work, and/or collaborate?
I feel that i can get a lot of work done by myself but when it comes to writing a paper i feel that i am much better with a group of friends who i can get feedback from while i am writing. Working alone has its benefits such as being able to focus more, being able to think clearly, and not having to worry about someone screaming or making loud noises. Working with in a group also has its benefits such as being able to get critiques at any time you want and being able to help give ideas if you are stuck.

Describe one valuable mistake you made this year.
I think that one valuable mistake that i have made this year was during the media saves the beach website. When i was helping to make the website we had pretty much waited until the last minute to really get anything done and because of that the website suffered. I know that if we had just put in the effort then there would have been a whole new website there.

What is your greatest strength as a student in a project-based learning environment?
I think that my greatest strength would be that i am very good with working with different people because i am better at that then working myself.

Writing Reflection

Please answer both of the following with substantial, thorough, thoughtful, well-revised, multi-paragraph pieces of writing that feature direct evidence, specific examples, and a high degree of honest self-reflection.

  • Explain one or more specific aspects of your writing that have improved this year. In this explanation, you must directly refer to at least two specific pieces of writing that you produced for this class. You may use any assignment, project, writing sample, draft, blog entry, etc. You should discuss the writing tips & strategies we studied, the processes & methods we used, the critiques & drafts we employed and the products we created (feel free to use these specific key terms to keep your reflection focused).
  • Describe one specific goal for your future writing. Your explanation of your goal(s) must include some or all of the following: writing samples from this year, writing strategies you have used in the past, writing strategies or techniques you would like to develop, examples from authors you respect, etc.

I feel that i have greatly improved this year in my writing. My American Icon writing piece i feel was one of the best essays that i have ever written because i had followed the writing tips. I made sure that i was making meaning early, and i used plenty of sensory details.

My next piece of writing that i am most proud of it would have to be my Ampersand piece. At first my Ampersand article was terrible and did not have any good quality's about it, i need to restart my whole article. After rethinking how to write my article i was able to include plenty of examples with help from my internship, and i also did my best of avoiding sledgehammer words as well as ing words.

In the future i want to be able to write more detailed essays that include more examples, quotes, and being able to incorporate the loop idea better. things that have worked well for me when i write are getting critiques, rereading, and going over my writing. Usually my strategy is to have a 5 paragraph essay that has an intro, 3 body paragraphs, and a conclusion.

Historical Refelction

Of all of the historical figures we have studied this year, including—but definitely not limited to—Presidents, philosophers, politicians, leaders, social movement-ers, and the many everyday people that have contributed to American history & culture, who would you most like to run into in college?

Describe specifically how you would interact with this person—is he/she a professor at your university? a fellow student? a leader? visiting campus? Cite at least three relevant primary sources for your quotes. If you are unsure what a primary source is, please check with me!

I think the most interesting character that we have learned about this year is John Adams. I think he would be an excellent choice to be my college campus leader because he was such a popular founding father and he supported equal rights for all diversities even if they were slaves. What also surprised be was he defended the British during the Boston Massacre, which was so strange because he was protecting them. He said that, "It is more important that innocence be protected than it is that guilt be punished, for guilt and crimes are so frequent in this world that they cannot all be punished. But if innocence itself is brought to the bar and condemned, perhaps to die, then the citizen will say," This shows how in his philosophy he supports every person and believes that they should have natural rights and a trial to defend themselves. Due to these events that had transpired it made it easier for me to see John Adams as the leader of my future college because he helped to create the building blocks for America's Constitution and laws.

Literary Reflections

If you could bring one character from any one book that we have read this year with you when you go to college, who would bring? Why?

This character could be your roommate (or suite-mate or housemate or whomever), a future classmate, a friend on campus, a professor, TA, grad student, or any other person you might regularly see on campus.

In a thoughtful blog entry, explain clearly who you would choose, what role he/she might take, and why you want to bring this particular character. Be sure to include specific evidence from the character, the book/novel, or other relevant sources.

If I could bring a character from a book that we have read to college with me, I would bring Doc from Cannery Row. I would want Doc to be an upper class student who could help me out my freshman year. In Cannery Row, Doc was always helping out Mac and the boys, and even when things went terribly wrong for example the party they had planned for him. Even though things had gone bad before he decided to he throw another one. He was always a very forgiving person and he even cleaned up the party. I think that Doc would be a great mentor because he is very smart and he was always tried to help everyone out. He helped the boys get money when they needed it, even when he hesitated to give them such an important job. He puts a lot of trust in the people around him and doesn't judge them if things don't go well.

Post Trial Reflection

1. Summarize the facts of the case, as presented by the prosecution. Include relevant witnesses and testimony.
The prosecutions main point was connected with the constitution, and how this law violated it and how related to immigration which is a federal issue. A main point that was repeated throughout the trial was a story about a McDonalds raid where a woman told the police officers that she was a citizen but they ignored her and took her to jail anyway. Their witnesses were James Madison, John Adams and Raul Grijalva.

2. Summarize the facts of the case, as presented by the defense. Include relevant witnesses and testimony.
The facts presented by defense was, the state of Arizona, were directly from the bill and from statistics about the bills approval. The main points had to do with the conditions that the illegal immigrants faced while crossing the border, and how this bill was a state crime law, not a federal immigration law. The witnesses were Jan Brewer, Russell Pierce and Robert Watchorn.

3. What was the most significant piece of evidence, in your personal opinion?
In my personal opinion i thought that the story on the McDonalds raid because i felt that this was a strong piece of evidence on the prosecuting side.

4. What was the most significant argument made, in your opinion?
I thought that the defenses argument about this being a crime law was a very good argument. On the other side, I thought that the prosecution's argument about this being racial profiling was very significant, During one point on the stand they were able to catch one of our witness's off guard because it can be very hard to profile someone besides basing them on their skin color, even though the bill says they will not be judged based on that.

5. What do you personally believe the correct verdict should be? Do you agree with the jury? Why or why not?
I believe the verdict that was made by the jury was a very good one. I didn't like that my side lost since we were on the defense team. I understand how they would come to that verdict, and I would agree with it.

I think I deserve a 40 out of 50 points because I worked hard and had notes and info on my character, i also helped out with looking for info that we could use against the prosecution. I however was unable to come up with cross examination questions which helped lead to my team's loss.

How/Why is/are World Wars 1 and/or 2 important today? How do they impact and/or inform our world today? hint: think about alliances, democracies around the world, cultures, international institutions, nuclear (and other) technologies, etc.

thanks to WW1 and WW2 they have allowed the US to become the strongest nation in the world. It has allowed us to advance our technology more so than would be possible if we hadn't had the wars. I also think that the world would be different if Great Britain had joined the Axis powers instead of the Allies. for example America would probably have been taken over since at that time they had not had the strongest military force compared to the other countries. I also think that if things had gone differently during that war that we might have launched more than just two nukes which could have changed the world drastically today. The wars were also important because they have helped us to build strong alliances with other countries. This is good for us because should we ever get into a war our allies will be there to help us out.

what interests me is the technology because i am so amazed how just spliting atoms can cause about a 13 mile radius of death and destruction. I want to know how America was able to discover how to make such a deadly weapon.

Semester 2 Blog 14

1. What are the most interesting aspects of World Wars 1 and 2?
world war 1: There was a book created during that time period it was called all quiet on the western front, its about the war and diseases that soldiers had while in these trenches fighting.

world war 2: My favorite part was when America decided to drop the A-bomb right on Hiroshima.

2. What do you hope to learn about these wars?
The leadership styles of each country at that time so i can know what was successful and what wasn't

3. How/Why are these wars important today? How do they impact and/or inform our world today? hint: think about alliances, democracies around the world, cultures, international institutions, nuclear (and other) technologies, etc.
I think that wars cause countries to band together to fight a common enemy and then when it is over they become allies and are there if they ever need help. Today we now know have much more advanced weapons that ever before.

semester 2 blog 13 Grapes of wrath

The Grapes of Wrath balances a number of broad stories about the dust bowl farmers, and one family's problems in particular during the novel. Almost every other chapter followed this zoomed in and zoomed out pattern, and it always gives new perspective about what was going on, sometimes this would even foreshadow an upcoming event. You were easily able to notice these two perspectives throughout the book and the impact it has on the reader.

One of the first zoomed out chapters is about a turtle and its journey crossing a road. "The turtle entered a dust road and jerked itself along, drawing a wavy shallow trench in the dust with its shell. The old humorous eyes looked ahead..." This zoomed out perspective foreshadows the Joad family who is slowly moving west to California. A couple of chapters later, the Joad family is on the move and they begin their slow journey west. The chapter helped to keep the story moving, preparing for what is to happen next.

Before Casy and Tom even make it to the farm, there is a zoomed out chapter that fits perfectly into the story. Chapter five was about the owners of the land, banks, tractors, and the "monster" they have created."You’re on land that isn’t yours. Once over the line maybe you can pick cotton in the fall. Maybe you can go on relief. Why don’t you go on west to California? There’s work there" This is good for people who don’t know much about the dust bowl, this chapter gives you an idea about the situation so many people were in, and eventually learn how the Joads are in this place too. This chapter impacted the novel and gave the reader background information about what story they were really getting into. You get to see this from the families’ perspective, this helps the reader to understand how the dust bowl farmers felt even before meeting the Joads. It made their situation more relatable and it showed how many people were in the same place.

Another zoomed out chapter that kept the book flowing was during chapter 27."I aim to pick some cotton. Got a bag? Well, no, I ain't. Coast ya a dollar, the bag. Take it out o' your first hunderd and fifty" This chapter was about the cotton pickers, how the people worked and what cotton picking was like. Steinbeck kept the dialogue vague and he mixed thoughts, conversations and descriptions together. This chapter impacted the novel through the way it was written, and because it gave the greater perspective, and helped me to realize that everyone at that point was going through the same thing on the cotton farms. This also kept the book moving and also added some new twists to it.

Without the zoomed in, zoomed out chapters, the book would not have given the reader the same understanding they got from the balance of the two. The metaphors, foreshadowing, generalized thoughts and perspectives had an impact on the balance of the story with the Joads. The way Steinbeck wrote the book caused you to read more mindfully. This wasn’t just a novel about a family going through The Great Depression, it was about the whole country going through the same problem. The whole novel was impacted in a positive way that made you become a more involved and thoughtful reader.

a public works project i would get rid of in today's society is the self check out line machines. I understand the point of them but the only problem is the older generations of people. They have never experienced this so its gonna take them a very long to adapt and speed up. they also take away jobs from cashiers and replacing them with machines now its every future movie's worst nightmare having the world run by machines.

semester 2 honors blog 2

Cannery Row tells the story of the different people that live on the row. A symbol that i thought really defined an idea and had a lot of meaning was the bag of frogs that Mack and the boys give to Doc. I felt That the frogs tapped into the characters of Mack and his crew, Doc and Lee Chong. Through the characters interactions with the bag of frogs, more of their personalities are revealed.

In the novel Mack and the boys wanted to throw a party for Doc, for being such a good guy to everyone. In the novel, they go to Doc and ask if they can go get frogs for him. They told him that he would pay for each frog they got. This was a way to remove any thought of something else. Although at first he thought the frog situation was sketchy; having the boys get the frogs was a convenience for him and an act of kindness.

When Mack and the boys successfully return, they go to Lee Chong to bargain. At this point, Doc is still away, and Mack wanted to get food and other supplies for the party. For Lee Chong, this whole transaction was about making a profit, and a little bit about helping make the party for Doc happen.

The Boys had all good intentions in mind throughout the frog adventure, and they even take it one step further. Mack decides it would even be better if the frogs were right there in the doorway for Doc to see at the party. When Lee Chong agrees to this arrangement he went to the length of having Mack write out a paper giving Lee the frogs in case someone asks questions. This showed me how cold blooded Lee Chong was, and that money was all that mattered.

The party ends up being wild and out of control, and Doc doesn't even make it home to be a part of it. By the early morning when the house is completely trashed, the frogs began to escape. "well before dawn they had all gone." Doc is angry when he gets home, but in the end forgives them because he understands what their intentions were. That shows me what kind of a person doc is, in my opinion he is the type of guy that doesn't dwell in the past instead he moves on.

The frogs were literally treated as money in the novel, and can also be a symbol. Steinbeck used the frogs escaping as a connection to money. He showed how when money is within our reach, and you decide to do something nice by using that money to make someone happy is better that just wasting it. Doc shrugs it off, showing that money isn't a big deal for him. Mack and the boys show a lot of sadness at this point, and it wasn’t even about the money, it was the fact that they tried to do something nice with the money to make someone else happy.

The frogs helped to show the characters true colors. From how they interacted and reacted to the frogs, this also gave you a better look at what their role was. Lee Chong was the profit obsessed grocer, Mack and the boys were the men with good intentions and Doc was the one who was forgiving and kept his cool. All of the characters in the novel were working towards something, and this symbol was just one way to show how certain characters get there and what truly matters to them.

I think that grapes of wrath does successfully establish sympathy for the farmers during the dust bowl because it goes behind the scene to show how the people that were affect by the depression. i was new because i didn't know the pain that the families had to go through just so that they could provide a better life for their family. For example the Joad family who is struggling to keep everyone alive. the grandma and grandpa had already died, Casey is is jail, Connie was left behind, and tom is risking a parole violation to stay with his family. this book, in my opinion does establish sympathy for the Joad family, who were farmers originally.

Semester 2 honors history blog 1

Dear Obama,

I know that things must be difficult especially during these difficult times. If you find yourself needing some guidance to look towards i would suggest a book called "Great Recession" it details all of the actions that Roosevelt did during his terms in office. Just like how he came into office you were graced with a lot support from the American people determination to change the way things were done in the white house.

An article in the New Yorker written in 2008 said "Last week, the Department of Commerce reported that the economy is shrinking. Almost certainly, the United States has entered its twelfth official recession since Roosevelt’s death." just like Roosevelt you have to deal with the recession. Even if there are those that are beginning to lose faith in you, it doesn't matter because they have no idea how hard it is to run a country and the responsibility that comes with it. For the people that are calling you a socialist, dont worry. Imagine what FDR had to go through when he was trying to organize and making the economy stronger.

Anybody could tell you our economy isnt the strongest thing right, but I think your efforts so far have been very good for us. Roosevelt created plenty of new jobs and created agencies that helped to improve our country. For instance he created the REA (Rural Electrification Administration) which gave jobs to electricians who then brought electricity to rural areas. You too have done this, I've seen the construction that you have started to but, maybe you could work on creating more agencies like FDR did. I think that what you did for research universities was a very smart move because this would help us make advances in science, and putting more money into the subjects.

Your relationship with congress has definitely been a difficult one, especially with the split congress and so many conservatives accusing you of being a socialist. President Roosevelt actually threatened his congress in his own inaugural speech, which was bold and he was lucky enough to have a positive outcome. He said "I shall ask the Congress for the one remaining instrument to meet the crisis-broad Executive power to wage a war against the emergency..." I think that its time you told congress what time it is by putting your foot down on the ground. Right now you need to work on winning more republicans over by hearing them out and compromising. People these days are very stubborn and want something if it directly benefits them. As for democrats who speak against you, you just need to do the same thing. Just because they are in your party doesn't mean they think the same way you do, but despite them you're doing a great job leading them.

As for you look among the American people, you have already created a positive image that many people admire and will remember. FDR spoke to his nation when they needed it most. One example is when he re-opened the banks. I know you address the public much more, especially with so much technology to utilize, but don't forget that its important to always speak to your people. FDR did this, and "people were amazed, almost flattered that a president would talk to them directly on such an important subject." Speaking directly to the people is a good way to earn their trust especially in these dark times because people need hope.

Semester 2 blog 8

People may argue that Franklin Roosevelt and Barack Obama have common similarities about the bailout our nation. I think that they were similar leaders to our nation but, they had a few differences. They were both thrown onto the ropes in a time where out countries citizens were losing faith in the government.

They both came into the white house with new approaches on how the government should be acting. Roosevelt said that the state was "the machinery through which such mutual aid and protections is achieved. Our government is not the master but the creature of the people." Obama's speech was similar and shared the same views on how the government was supposed to be. During his inaugural speech, Obama said that "America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because We the People have remained faithful to the ideals of our forbearers, and true to our founding documents."

They both came in with a lot of new ideas, plenty of different programs, and bailout packages to help the people in their time of need. They were both strong willed upon entering the white house, bith ready to put new bills and laws into action. Roosevelt and Obama weren't afraid to tell congress how things were change and how they were serious about turning the depression around. Roosevelt had an easier time getting congress to agree with him, because he didnt have as large of a budget deficit to address unlike Obama.

People found that Roosevelt's radio broadcasts spook directly to them about how they shouldn't lose faith in their government. Obama did this in but in a different way, by broadcasting important summits, his most recent one was on health care. Most of the time now Obama is broadcasting actual discussions that has had with congress on the air. This still amazes people because they able to watch and listen to the discussions and see how our president actually is dealing with the crisis in America.

semester 2 internship photo essay

As I first started out at my internship I was given simple tasks such as filing, rearranging folders as they saw fit and physically taking apart computers. When my mentor first told me this I thought that I wasn’t going to get the full internship experience but I sucked it up and decided to just do the work and see if I would be getting anything harder in the future. At first I wasn’t the best at Dreamweaver but as time progressed I was given more and more tasks to work on. For example in the beginning it was mainly just rewording words but near the end I was linking and creating code for different parts of the websites. This only lasted for about a week then my mentor started giving me actual work to do. I felt like I was a bird and I was being released into the wild where I could learn how fly from the other birds.

Since I didn’t know that much about making websites on Dreamweaver they had me start on some basic web designing, which was at first just adding and taking things out. The little that they had taught me was more than I knew from school because there I thought that I knew the basics but it turns out that I was wrong. After learning that little bit from my mentor I wished I had known the material earlier when I was working on the Media Saves The Beach website. This didn’t bother me because at that time all I wanted to do was just get my work done then leave to go home. Sometimes it would be replacing words and other times it would be add pictures they even had me work with some code a few times. This became so easy that I found ways to do it faster for example, when I would be adding in photos or videos I would copy a picture of video already on the website and then just paste it next to it. Next I would go to the code and just make the corrections I needed so that it was what I wanted to have on it. Many people would call that lazy but I say it’s resourceful because I learned how to work around the system and do things in my own way.

One of the first website that I work on was called Global Oceanic and I had been asked to create the FAQ page. So I had to start by first putting the questions on the website I then had to create mini links for each and every questions. I felt that this was a really great way for me to learn some tricks for the future in case I ever need to do it again. However, this required me to look on the Internet and find how I was supposed to even attempt this. At first I was stuck but then I asked a fellow worker on how to do it and helped to guide me into the right direction. This experience also taught me to not be afraid to ask for help from the other employees. Now I don’t feel as shy or ashamed to ask for help if I’m stuck on a problem or lost because if I don’t then I will never get anywhere and remain stuck on that problem. I now know how important it is to raise your hand and ask for help.

The next website I worked on was for a company called DICA, for this website I was asked to add products to their product page. This was a bit easier because all I had to do was to add the product and to include its dimensions; the amount it weighted and I also had to give a picture of the product. This had taught me how to use a simpler style of making websites because for this website I had to fill in the blanks with each of the items requirements. This was a simple project but took a while because there at least 30-40 different products that I had to full into the blanks. I was finished with this project much faster than the other projects I was working on. This was mainly due to the fact that the site builder I had been using was very user friendly. This ment that it was very easy to use and can easily be taught to other people who may be struggling with web design. Luckily I was the only web design intern there other wise I might have had to have taught that person how to using the web page builder.

Now that I had become more comfortable with using Dreamweaver my mentor Adam decided to let me do some of the harder things that his client had been asking to do. So I started to work more on the harder things like adding tabs to the KEZA website, I would also be adding links to different website, linking videos on to the website that were viewable from right there. I was also given the task to create the gallery page, which showed of the different events that the KEZA Company had been doing. I found this to be a very easy thing to do because all I had to do was to put an image on page then I would link it another page that was full of the images I wanted in the gallery. The best part about working on the website was that every day after work I would show my mom the work I had done so as the days progressed she noticed the many changes to the website. This was a great way for me to show what I had learned from my time at my internship. In the end the website turned out to be the best website that I had ever done and many of my fellow students felt that this was very professional and looks very good.

Adam McWethy
Adam McWethy is a free thinker and always has been since his days in college. After getting out he work on Wall Street for a while until he broke his knee. He then decided to create a graphic design company with his brother Todd. 7 years later they have been working with several companies either designing their web page or even creating it for them. Adam could be described as a free man because he became his own boss. He is a calm man never raising his voice but if his is unhappy there is a big change in the tone of his voice. Adam is the kind of man you want as a boss he is cool and gives the off a very relaxing environment.

I want to know what else I should add?
What makes this a good piece?
What is something that I need to improve or make stronger?

Semester 2 blog 1

Two links that i found were
Bono: Interview
Britney Spears: Interview

What makes a good interview i think is a mixture of different things, such as information that is relevant to the topic but that doesn't overwhelm the reader with to much to read. The finalized piece must also have some picture to grab the viewers attention so that they aren't bored reading. When writing an interview i think its good to start the interview by giving a little bit of about the person who is being interviewed then maybe add some of the interview questions and answer. What makes these really good is only if the reader is able to understand what the point of the interview was and if they are able to take something from the writing piece.
