1. Nick is the narrator because of the way he talks. He seems to be on the shy side of things and his biases are against Tom because Tom talks about him like he is some sort of a ladies man meanie who is cocky and rich.
2. i think he gets a sign of someone whos not directly involved with the stroy but still gives them an opinion on things. its a strange way to tell the story.
